          recycle

So every time we are done with our old computer, we are all faced with the decision of how to dispose of it.  More often than not, they are just thrown in the trash.  Most of us do not even know what makes up electronics much less why they could be hazardous.  Fortunately, many states and agencies have made it easy to now properly recycle our electronics.

According to the EPA over 2.5 million tons of electronics are discarded each year.  This is a serious environmental risk because these electronics contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, chromium, chromium and many other long named materials that spell disaster. By throwing our electronics in the trash we are polluting our water ways, our soil and our ozone.

The question is, what exactly should we do with our electronics?  There is several solutions.

-           The first is to check the Directory for a location near you.

-           Another option is the USPS free recycling “mail back” program.  Use envelopes or boxes found at local post offices (which include free shipping as well!) to package up and mail your electronics for recycling.

-           Some other options if your electronics are just old but still work, look for a local charity, school or other organization that could reuse your electronics.
