Top Free Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Solutions
I am not going to say these are the only options, nor will I claim they are going to be 100%. In fact, I put no warranty of any type on this information! It is opinion only.
With that said, Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware solutions today are the talk of the internet. Everywhere you browse you see adds for ways to protect, clean up and optimize your pc. As a general computer user, this has got to be one of the most difficult subjects to understand and sift through. Earlier I wrote a blog about Malware, explaining what malware really is and some basic advise. Here I will go into some detail about three free Anti-Virus solutions and three free Anti-Spyware solutions. Of note, these solutions are only free for home use, for your business you must purchase software. You can simply purchase any of the following for your business if you would like.
AntiVirus
AVGAVG believes everyone has the right to basic computer security at no charge. AVG has a fairly simple interface that will protect your emails, provide basic protection while browsing, automatically update and will allow you to schedule scans. This is a great simple solution with very little hassles that will provide good reliable protection for your home PC.

AvastAvast rivals AVG in popularity. It offers slightly more enhanced run time (meaning while you are using the computer) protection, offers automatic updates, scheduled scans and email protection. If the user interface was easier to navigate and use, I would personally hail Avast as the best of the free solutions. The other annoyance with Avast is every year you have to go through a free registration in order to keep using it.

Avira AntiVircnet just recently rated Avira AntiVir as the best free antivirus available. Due to this, I have made sure to include this on my list. Avira AntiVir is a very good, reliable antivirus that offers nearly identical features and capabilities to AVG. Short of a different interface, you could easily mistake the two.

Anti-Spyware
Ad-AwareFor years now Ad-Aware has been a staple anti-spyware solution. It has a good run-time protection environment that will protect you against most common spyware threats. With the free version you can schedule automatic updates, automatic scans and run time protection. Lavasoft does limit the extent of customizability and run-time protection though.

Spybot S&DThis completely free solution has been around for a long time. They have insisted on keeping their service free, only accepting donations to keep the project alive. It is not quite as capable overall at discovering and removing spyware as other options, but what Spybot does offer is one of the fastest scans available for commonly known spyware threats. This is a great software to accompany one of the other spyware solutions.

Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareThis anti-spyware solutions has gotten cnet’s seal of approval this year by earning editor’s choice in April of 09. It is a pretty effective anti-spyware solution that scans faster than Ad-Aware, and is more capable then Spybot. If you are looking for a good solution that will take less time, this is the way to go.
